Ivan Bailey Metal Studio January, 2007
Graduate Level Independent Studies /Apprentice Program
The basic requirement is a degree in art, and at least enough experience at the forge to demonstrate a sustained interest in, and aptitude for forging. The student must be at least 21 years old. The Curriculum The course of studies would be planned jointly with the instructor in order to best suit the needs of the student. It would include various projects designed to give the student facility and control of the hammer(s). The student would be able to watch the instructor whenever desired, and for example, observe the processes required to make a fire screen and then make one him/herself, perhaps a miniature one , or one for the student’s client. The student is encouraged to continue making any saleable items he/she already makes and to attend shows and festivals if desired. They are also encouraged to seek their own commissions and to this end would accompany the instructor to his client meetings in order to observe his sales methods. Likewise going on installations would be taken for granted. Schedule. The student will set his /her own schedule of holidays and workdays. There will be no set holidays or periods of the year when the student is expected not to be present. Studio The new studio will be in a metal tractor building consisting of three bays each 33 ft. square. One bay will be the forging room with two or three forges around the Kb1 power hammer and the treadle hammer and the bender. Each student would have an independent forge and workbench. One of the other bays will be the welding and grinding and assembly room with two or three assembly/layout areas and workbenches along with two mig welders and various grinders. The third bay will be for material storage and cutting with the 5hp.14in.Carborundum saw and for painting /finishing and storage of finished goods. Tuition The tuition is $14,000.00 per year payable semi annually in advance. The tuition includes a place to live and electricity and gas. At present the property has a separate cottage on the other side of the studio from my living quarters. It has two rooms and a bathroom so is suited for one student. I plan to build additional living quarters in the barn in the area now taken up by 5 sheep stalls. The setting , five miles north of Monticello Ga. is 58 miles outside the perimeter highway (285) is quite lovely and the 300 acres is being minimally developed into 20 parcels from 10 to 30 acres each ,keeping 100 acres for communal trails along the two creeks. It also has a new 13 acre lake ,spring fed , which is good for swimming and fishing. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get to Atlanta , so its easy enough to take advantage of its many cultural and other events and opportunities. |
